Bad Odors = Bad Mood

What if I told you what you were smelling at any given moment can have a huge effect on your mood without you even knowing it?!

Our brains process information from our senses of vision, taste, touch, and balance, sending it to the brain’s main control center, and we are very aware of them. However, the only sense that doesn’t get processed this way? Smell! Our sense of smell travels its own path to regions in the brain where emotions and memories are aroused outside of our consciousness. This is how we are influenced by smells and usually don’t realize it’s happening. Smells can cause an emotional response connected to a memory, either without the actual memory attached, or by bringing the memory along with it.

We don’t need to see the results of scientific studies to know that smells are very powerful, and can move us both positively and negatively. If we walk into a house or business with a bad smell, we’re likely to be in a bad mood, but if we walk into somewhere with pleasant aromas, it puts us in a good mood. So where, and how often are we receiving our daily smells? Well, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the average American spends 93% of their life indoors, 70% of this time is in our homes! And with the pandemic, that number is likely increasing. You see where I’m going with this? Yes! It’s extremely important to have good scents throughout your home that elicit wonderful thoughts, feelings and memories.
