Nostalgia and Health

We’ve all had that feeling, it’s a warm fuzzy feeling that we can’t quite describe. It could be a smell from the past, a movie scene from our childhood, or eating something that reminds of us our old house. We call it nostalgia, the name we’ve given this mysterious feeling. We know it when we feel it, we know it feels good, and now we are seeing studies show that nostalgia can help our mental health!

A writing study from the journal Psychology & Health in 2016 found that people who were instructed to write about a nostalgic event scored higher in health optimism and health attitudes than those who wrote about ordinary events. The nostalgia also motivated physical fitness evidenced by the nostalgic group increasing their physical activity over the next two weeks, according to their Fitbit activity trackers.

Nostalgia can also motivate and energize the mind. Experts show that nostalgic memory exercises can increase optimism, inspire, and foster creativity. The team here at Nostalgia Candle Company had this in mind when designing our candles.
